Lead the Sustainable Communities and Resource Recovery team to support Council’s growth agenda and strategic plans. Ensure land use activities, waste facilities, human health and other activities within the community and the organisation meet sound environmental and sustainable outcomes and necessary statutory requirements by applying legislation applicable to environment, sustainability and human health.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Implement, monitor and review as needed, Council’s Waste Resource & Recovery Strategy and Sustainable Communities Strategy.
  • Support the Director and Executive team to explore opportunities and provide strategic advice for future viable economic and environmental waste and resource recovery solutions.
  • Contribute to Council’s growth agenda through providing strategic advice to relevant plans and programs and contribute to the efficient delivery of Council’s development assessment processes.
  • Manage, develop and implement programs for education and collaboration within the organisation and the community on appropriate environmental values and the importance of preserving/protecting/rehabilitating natural systems in balance with economic development.
  • Manage and monitor all approval applications with Council relating to waste and resource recovery facilities, food premises, on-site sewage management, liquid trade waste or other environmental health related matters.
  • Manage inspection programs and maintain registers in such environmental health areas but not limited to, food premises, liquid trade waste, skin penetration, public swimming pools, onsite sewage management, contaminated land, legionnaires, UPSS, illegal land use.
  • Manage and develop financial plans including budgeting and forecasting for the short and long term of Council’s Waste and Resource Recovery business.
  • Seek and manage approved external funding including grants for projects relevant to environmental and sustainability initiatives, prepare high quality applications for external funding opportunities and implement projects where funding is received.
  • Manage and fulfil Council’s environmental responsibilities under the administration of the NSW EPA including legal proceedings, audits for licenced premises and other Council obligations under the Protection of the Environment Operations Act 1997 and associated statute and regulations. 

We are looking for 

Someone who has highly developed research, analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to think strategically. You will have a well-developed understanding of the role of Local Government in Environmental Health and Sustainability and have strong interpersonal and communication skills to liaise with a wide variety of people including all levels of staff, public and government bodies. 

We are seeking someone who has:

  • Bachelor of Environmental Science and/or Health Sciences or similar and 7 years' experience in a related environment 
  • SafeWork Construction Induction Card (WHS White Card)
  • Current Class C Driver Licence 

About the Role

Full time: 70-hour fortnight

Salary: Range from $121,825 to $147,820 pa + 11.5% super
